Masterseminar Tragkonstruktionen - Konstruktives Entwerfen 2: MODELLING AND SIMULATION (6 LP)

Software to simulate structures (Tragwerk), air flow (Luftströmung), temperature and light is more and more used within the early architectural design process. The aim of this seminar is to provide an overview of what can be simulated with what software and what limits. As well as how to interpret the results of the simulation.

The focus of this seminar is to show how to create a model that is needed for the required area of application and what the restrictions of the specific setup are. Therefore the underlying principles of the simulation and the corresponding abstractions and simplifications are explained and demonstrated with case studies. First with an experimental approach that is then digitally simulated. With the aid of digital modelling software and scripting tools (Rhino, Grasshopper, Kangaroo3D, Karamba3D, several plug-ins).

The seminar starts with a series of expert lectures followed by hands-on tutorials divided into the simulation of structures, temperature, air flow and light. Then the participants form groups in which they design a demonstrator that is informed by one of the above mentioned simulations. With weekly feedback sessions that are supervised by tutors and a final presentation at the end of the semester.

Prerequisites: The seminar is taught in English. Interest in simulation, modelling, engineering, digital technologies and abstraction. Good Rhinoceros and Grasshopper skills are of advantage but not necessary.
