ITECH M.Sc. Thesis Project 2024: Gradient Density–A novel method for column-to-slab joints in point-supported cross-laminated timber slabs

Otto Lindstam, Chris Kang

This research investigates a novel design-fabrication system using localised timber densification to enhance mechanical properties and tailor them to structural demands. A key application is the column-to-slab joint in point-supported CLT slabs, where the method reinforces the area without puncturing the material, addressing compressive, bending, and punching shear loads. By pressing and glueing hardwood plugs into the cross-section, the design increases local fibre content while retaining the original height, resulting in a high-performance joint. The study covers design, fabrication, and evaluation, substantiated by mechanical testing, fabrication trials, and prototyping.
