FLEXIBLE FORMS: Biocomposites Experimental Pavilion

The first experimental pavilion, realized by the department of Biobased Materials and Material Cycles in Architecture (BioMat), located at the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), is a double-curved, parametrically designed segmental shell of light, single-curved wood and biocomposite elements supported by three curved crossed wooden beams. The holistic geometry of the shell resembles a 3D fabric in which the curved elements are connected with nodes in all directions in space. This allows us to express new aesthetic architectural features of the future made possible by the use of digital manufacturing technologies and data flow management.

The BioMat department focuses on the mission to investigate different aspects of sustainability in architecture. This built 1:1 model is the result of 10 months of intensive work, which is based on many years of work in the field of applications of bio-based materials and various approaches for a future-oriented sustainable architecture.
